This 6-hour class introduces you to basic techniques of indigo dyeing and shibori, traditional Japanese resist methods for creating surface design on fabric. Participants will dye silk scarves or fat quarters of cotton in vats of pre-reduced indigo using arashi, itajime, and stitching for the resist patterning. Participants will have an opportunity to apply one or more of these methods to during the class.
$35 materials fee to be paid directly to Karen on the day of class, she will also have additional materials available for purchase. In addition you are also welcome to bring one or two items from home to dye, they should be either cotton, linen, or silk.
